Gang Starr Foundation affiliate emcee, Afu-Ra has returned with his sixth studio LP, Urban Chemistry; an international affair that boasts a guest feature from a different part of the world on each track. And similar to Afu’s successful alignment with DJ Premier in the early part of his career, the life force emcee joins forces with the Montpellier-based producer, Digital Cut across all 18 tracks.
Throughout the album, Afu and Cut take us on a sonically diverse journey that includes raw boom bap, soulful hip-hop, club-ready anthems, and some reggae. And although we find Afu reuniting with Big Shug on the album’s title track, the majority of the LP pairs Afu with an international supporting cast that includes Sizzla, Lyricson, Lord Kossity, LMK, Stranjah Miller, Myriam Sow and even Mann—who many remember for his 2010 released remix for his hit single, “Buzzin,” featuring 50 Cent—on the revolutionary, “Reign on Me” which is accompanied with a beautifully shot video directed by Castaka Pictures.
Afu continues his global adventures with the stunning new video for “Molecular,” a high-energy collaboration with Jamaican reggase artist/deejay Jah Mason and Rocca (of Tres Coronas). The journey begins on the streets of Colombia where Afu is joined by Rocca, followed by his trip back to France where he connects with Jah Mason on the scenic French Alps.
Altogether, Urban Chemistry is an ambitious project for Afu, and it arrives at a time of pure creativity for the longtime artist.
“The resurgence of my career with this new album was prompted by my desire to bring back quality music into the hip-hop industry.”
