Royce Da 5’9 Throws the “Book of Ryan” At You (Music)

Royce Da 5’9 has been hitting the fans with countless bangers this year! The resurgence of the powerhouse duo PRhyme (consisting of Royce Da 5’9 and DJ Premier) earlier this year dropped PRhyme 2, which was surely a hit amongst the hip hop masses.

Just when we thought we were thoroughly entertained, Royce Da 5’9 hits us with his single “Boblo Boat” featuring J Cole from the highly anticipated Book of Ryan album, which dropped at midnight. The project features Eminem, Pusha T, Jadakiss, Fabolous, T Pain, Chavis Chandler, Boogie, Agent Sasco , Marsha Ambrosious, Robert Glasper and many more!

“Boblo Boat” captivated fans and became a viral sensation in social media as dabs creates their own verse as a challenge. The melodic track is complimented with smooth delivery of lyrics in which both J Cole and Royce reminisce about their youth. Cole and Royce are seen spitting verses at festival grounds at night. Youthful shenanigans take place throughout the video. I think it could’ve had a better treatment, but it made its point.

Today, Royce premiered jaw dropping verses and crazy visuals for the single “Caterpillar”, a collaboration with Eminem and a touch of King Green on the hook. The high energy video is black and white with splashes of red for just the right touch of theatrics. The bar exchange is nasty between the trio. I’m not a big Eminem fan, but I must say he went in on this joint! He made me re-evaluate my thoughts on his lyrical abilities and the return to hip hop. King Green added a bold dynamic to the video with his commanding presence and refreshing cadence. Royce has been super consistent lately. He is slowly but surely becoming a new fav in my book. The video “Caterpillar” epitomizes what I love in hip hop. It has dope verses, an energetic beat that compels me to dance, and intriguing visuals that keeps me at attention. It’s far from the cliche videos I’ve seen lately.

The Book of Ryan is a gem for an avid boom bap lovers collection. What a year for authentic hip hop! I’m impressed by Royce and his contributions. He has raised the bar and I look forward to the evolution of his lyricism.
