Legendary Juice Crew member and battle rapper extraordinaire Roxanne Shante’s biopic titled “Roxanne Roxanne” will be coming to Netflix. After rave reviews from Sundance Film Festival 2017, the film is finally getting the exposure it deserves. The riveting film about the Queens native stars Academy Award winning actor Mahershala Ali, Nia Long and debuts fresh face actress Chanté Adams who portrays the hip hop icon.
Roxanne Shante first entered the hip hop scene at the young age of 14. This young queen held her own as a battle rapper amongst her fellow Juice Crew members, a collective of legends consisting of, Marley Marl, Biz Markie, Masta Ace, Big Daddy Kane, Craig G, MC Shan, and Kool G Rap & DJ Polo. She was best known for her cadence and prowess on the mic.
When she dropped “Roxanne’s Revenge”, a response to UTFO’s hit song “Roxanne Roxanne”, she went on to set the tone for female rappers in the industry — coming with hardcore lyrics and a powerful delivery over hits like “Live On Stage”, “Go On Girl” and “Queen of Rox” to name a few.
If you are a hip hop lover, be sure to show your support. I’m looking forward to seeing this intriguing story. It’s refreshing to see films with a strong female lead. The life of a young female rapper’s emergence to fame in a male dominated industry in the early 80’s definitely wasn’t easy. Check out the trailer the below. “Roxanne Roxanne” drops March 23rd on Netflix, so mark your calendars.
Weekly Rap Gods salutes this queen from Queens for sharing her intimate story with the world and her amazing contributions to hip hop!
