After a three-year hiatus, MF DOOM’s protégé, StaHHr returns with a lyrical homage to the artists that influenced her titled “Respect Due”. Mixed by DJ Deliver and hosted by Fort Knox, this series/project features StaHHr aka Barbarella over some of her favorite, classic instrumentals. “Respect Due Vol.1″ is AVAILABLE NOW FOR DOWNLOAD!
She sets off the project using the beat from “Lost Ones” by Lauryn Hill expressing her authority and position as a female emcee, as well as paying homage to some of the greatest emcees of our time. On each joint, she slices through your favorite 90s classics with well sharpened bars. Here’s a sample of some of StaHHr’s standout lyrics. These are layered over the DWYCK beat produced by the legendary DJ Premier:
“For Christ sake, man christ fake, barley 6 years old and I almost got raped / after that I didn’t really have much faith, it took a long time for me to feel safe.”
This is just a taste of what’s to come from Barbarella. I’m definitely excited and curious to hear what she does on a full album.
As a bonus to this mixtape, she gives you “Go Time” with Astronote — a producer out of France who also has production credits with Kendrick Lamar. This song gives you a glimpse of her powers over original production. Listen for yourself:
Lastly, a couple of week’s ago we invited StaHHr to spit 60 Seconds of Flame for us and our partners at WRAP.fm. Check it out:
