In Lieu of Athletes Taking A Stand, J. Period’s “RISE UP!” Means So Much More These Days (Music)

RISE UP! is the title single from Cali born and Brooklyn based DJ/Producer J. Period’s latest EP project entitled “RISE UP! Music Inspired By America Divided”. The track clocks in at 5:22 and features Hip-Hop Luminaries, “The War Monkey” Pharaohe Monch (Organized Konfusion), Posdnuos (De La Soul), Black Thought (The Roots), and assisted by English melodic wailing songbird Joss Stone.

The context of RISE UP! is a social commentary of the current state of affairs of music, specifically the “Mumble Rap” phenomenon, disunity in a country that supposedly espouses unity, and the call to action to “Rise out of the flames like a Phoenix” and reclaim our greatness as a civilized nation.

J. Period’s sonic backdrop provides enough knock to get the listeners head nod going, but stays modest enough to let each emcee spit effortlessly, without letting the message get lost in the beat.

The intro of John F. Kennedy and outro of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helps remind the listener that we are a nation indivisible, and we must at all cost protect those civil liberties.

Interestingly enough, with the oceans wide divide of Americans who show continued support of, or against the NFL, songs like this can easily become the “new” anthem, and rallying cry of rebellion.
